I was very impressed by Tadao Ando and James Turrell’s work after a trip to Japan a few years ago, and I suddenly found this museum with works of both of them in Korea, and the reviews on tripadvisor are all very good, I have decided that I have to go to this place in my next trip!
This museum in Wonju, Gangwondo was built under Tadao Ando’s signature concrete building in harmony with the surrounding natural environment.
James Turrell is famous for using light as the medium for his installation art works, I was left with a deep impression after I saw his work a few years ago.
How to get there: From Gangnam Express Bus Terminal or East Seoul Bus Terminal to Wonju (about 90 minutes), then take either shuttle bus or taxi (25 mins, 20000W for taxi) to the museum, you can check the latest shuttle bus timetable on the museum website. (The timetables on Korean web and English web are different when I went, the staff there said they will change it later, I am not sure if they will do that, so be careful and ask if you have doubts.)

新增2017年四月的照片和後記 Added after my visit in April 2017
After buying the ticket and entering the museum complex, visitors will walk past in between Flower Garden and Sculpture Garden first and also a short path lined with bamboo trees.
If I went a few days earlier, then I should be able to see more cherry blossoms. After walking past this part, we will arrive at the Water Garden and then the main museum.
Inside the main museum, there is the paper museum and some modern art exhibitions.
From the main museum , we can see this cafe with water and mountains as the background. According to the museum guide, this is the place where Gong Yoo filmed the Kanu CF.
From the other side of the door, we can go to the Stone Garden, the design of this place is inspired by Shilla Royal Tombs, and we can arrive at the James Turrell Exhibition after we walk past this garden.
This picture below should be taken in winter after snow? Looks like a totally different place!

Admission to the James Turrell Exhibition costs extra, and photography is not permitted inside (so that is why I did not have any pictures from inside that area), the exhibitions are similar to the ones I have seen before in Naoshima, Japan. If you have never seen it before, it is highly recommended. Amazing art exhibition with unimaginable use of light. The most unforgettable experience here for me is the view from the window up in Horizon Room, I saw the view of the Oak Valley decorated with cherry blossoms. (Maybe this view can be seen from other places in the resort, but I only saw this beautiful view from the museum here.)
