These are my results for 40th and 51th TOPIK. Just wanna share a bit on some of things I learnt from the preparation and exam. (My purpose for taking the exam is just to check my own level, I do not need it for study or work, so your preparation method might be a […]

Untitled collage

Korean Learning- TOPIK II Exam preparation

These are my results for 40th and 51th TOPIK. Just wanna share a bit on some of things I learnt from the preparation and exam.

Untitled collage

(My purpose for taking the exam is just to check my own level, I do not need it for study or work, so your preparation method might be a lot more different if you have a deadline to meet.)

I actually did not really study in between the two exams in the last two years. The only things I do are watch K drama/variety shows I am interested in, read (sometimes translate) interviews of actors whom I like, watch JTBC news 2 months before exam as background (sometimes active listening), use Korean while travelling in Korea, talk to italki Korean tutors around once every two weeks. I was surprised when I did past papers this year, I found I have improved for both listening and reading, I can understand more and my reading speed is also faster. Language learning really takes time.

Some of the things I have learnt

  1. Time yourself to do past papers, one or two is enough. I did more past papers including the ones in old format in my first attempt, I did not think it helped improve my exam technique or language at all. I know there are people who do the past papers, check all the words, remember them all and then revise over and over. I think that may be helpful in improving your Korean, BUT for me, as revision materials, exam papers are way too boring… I prefer other medium…
  2. If you are just of intermediate level, you can never finish the reading paper, do not even try to do it, focus on the earlier questions and try to be as accurate as possible in your answers (rather than skimming through them in an attempt to finish the paper). Because with your level, in the end, you will not get a lot of the advanced questions right even if you manage to finish the paper, and you may make a lot of silly mistakes in the reading paper.
  3. Listening. Try not to daydream in the first part in which the material will not be repeated. If your reading is in intermediate level, you may find it difficult to finish reading all the options after listening, so try to read while you are listening at the same time. For the second part, sometimes you get extra time because the materials will be repeated, do not waste the time, use it to look at the options in the next questions, so you can guess and know beforehand what the material will be about. If you have even more time, you can go read the writing questions and think about it.
  4. Writing. Read the past papers and remember sentence structures that are useful in writing. For the first part, remember stuff for like asking for help etc. For the data part, remember structures for describing data. (You can read sample answers in past papers to learn how to describe them.) For essay, remember sentence structures for argumentative essay, stuff like “in conclusion”, “first of all”, etc.
  5. Bring some food/snack and drink in case you are hungry during the break.

The restaurant Riccardo that often appears in the drama is also in Heyri Art Village (also is the place where Se Joo and Jeon Seol had their date), but this place is closer to gate 1 of the village, you can find the place following the map on their website, the restaurant is marked with the green dot on the map.

The car park in While You Were Sleeping Ep 1/2, COMF-Tree Restaurant is the one on the left hand side of the pic, when you go to this place the next time, remember to go to the back to see the car park. Dunno if these pretty lights are there every night??

When I watched Ep 11, I thought this place is very familiar, is it Heyri and I can confirm it today.

The place where Writer-nim danced haha is the space under a building called the Step in Heyri, you can see a picture of it here on this blog.

Space Shinseon Chicago Typewriter Ep 11 Filming Location- Space Shinseon

This is the art gallery where Se Joo and Jeon Seol had their date in ep 11, did you think it look similar to the Seolnongtang place they went together before? According to their website, this place is operated by the Seolnongtang company and a brand named Si.Wha.Dam, it is actually right adjacent to it in Itaewon. Space Shinseon is a space for food culture, art and sharing.

Buam-dong Attractions 1- Seoul Museum

A very pretty and special art museum! Going to write about this place soon! This is an art museum? Did you insert some wrong pics here?

No, I didn’t. This is Seokpajeong in Seoul Museum, it is a historic place which is part of this art museum, you can only get here after buying the museum ticket and then taking the elevator up to the top floor. The museum bought this place first, and then build the museum around this, that is why the art museum fits so well with this historic place.

Here at Seokpajeong, the view is like that of Chinese or Korean traditional landscape painting already, and from here we can see part of the Seoul old city walls nearby on the hills. There are two walking paths here, the Walk of Cloud and the Walk of Water, one with modern mural paintings, the other with words that can make us reflect about our life (though only in Korean), I think it is a good place for us to have some quiet moments recharging and reflect on ourselves while we wander around the art with the music in the background.

I visited the museum towards the end of the cherry blossoming period. Even when a lot of the flower petals were on the ground already, it still looked beautiful. I can only imagine how much more beautiful it would have been if I had been there a week earlier.

Exhibition in the museum changes every now and then, when I went there, the exhibits include Saimdang’s drawings and an exhibition named Cafe Society. Cafe Society was an art exhibition in which works from a group of young artists were shown in an environment that was made to look like a cafe.

One of the most impressing exhibit for me was the Music Room, it was a big dark room where MVs of a series of songs for comfort were shown.

KakaoTalk_Photo_2017-05-17-20-28-51_54

One of them is the OST from Misaeng (and I am rewatching the drama because of this), when I sat there in the room,  I felt like I could just sit there for more than an hour! (What a pity I was in a hurry to go to another place so I did not…)

These two other songs also left an impression on me.

This is what the museum actually looks like from the outside, this looks like an art museum, right?

I saw a lot of tour buses and Hong Kong and mainland Chinese tourists there that day, and then later I found, there was actually a cosmetic and skin care shop right below… (!) No wonder… (Renting the place out to support the museum???)

Transport: Gyeongbukgong Station Exit 3, walk to bus stop, take bus 1020, 1711, 7016, 7018, 7022, 7212 and get off at Jahamun Tunnel (자하문터널) Station. (Source)

There are lots of places worth going around Buam-dong, I will write about them one by one:

Yoon Dong Ju Literature House and Poet’s Hill

Inwang Mountain

Zaha Museum
